I was chatting with a new client the other day and she asked if it was better to have your profile pic or your company logo as your online avatar.
My answer to her was: it depends.
If you are building your personal brand online, so anything associated with your name will show up when you Google yourself (or when someone else Googles you), then you should have your own image, ideally your smiling face, appear as much as possible.
But if your brand is represented solely by a single person, you might risk losing part of your audience should that person ever leave your company. If it’s your image, it might be difficult to sell your business once you are ready to move on to the next project. This isn’t a big deal if you are someone like Colonel Saunders, but if you are Microsoft, and you lose someone like Robert Scoble, it can negatively impact your business.
If you are branding your business, making the brand recognizable might be the better plan of action. The flip side of this is, people prefer to do business with friends, and your logo is not going to be friends with anyone. It all depends on what your long term strategy is, and how you plan on developing your brand.
What do you have for your avatar? Your face or your logo?
