Creating a Personal Code of Ethics

I was recently invited challenged to create a list of ethics that apply to me.

After careful deliberation, and some critical self-analysis, this is what I came up with.

I challenge you to create and share your personal ethics

These are the pillars that will support the ethical decisions that I make, and I welcome your feedback.

World – The decisions I make are based on the impact that they have on society.  I believe that I am here to try and make the world a better place, so my decisions must first and foremost consider the impact that they have on the world physically as well as the potential impact on society.

“The world is not dangerous because of those who do harm but because of those who look at it without doing anything” – Albert Einstein

Wellness – The decisions I make are based on the impact they physically have on me, as well as the company I work at and the people I love. I believe that by considering the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of my decisions I will create and maintain a healthy environment

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. – World Health Organization, 1948

Wisdom – The decisions I make are based on the impact that they might have on those I love, lead, or live with.  I believe that true wisdom is knowledge applied to help others.

Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a polluted mind, suffering will follow you, as the wheels of the oxcart follow the footsteps of the ox. Everything is based on mind, is led by mind, is fashioned by mind. If you speak and act with a pure mind, happiness will follow you, as a shadow clings to a form. – Buddah

By incorporating these tenets, I will ensure I am able to make a decision that reflects my ethics, my morality, and my personal beliefs.  Each decision must be weighed to ensure that each pillar is represented properly.
