I am a proud Canadian, and I enjoy the traditions and customs that we have developed here. I may not be a huge hockey fan, but I think the Olympics brings out a different emotion than a regular NHL game. I get caught up in the moment, and I like to celebrate every goal that Team Canada gets, and I think the other 33+ million of us across the country share this feeling.
Last night, Team Canada not only won the gold medal in women’s hockey – they shutout the ‘merican team. Apparently this is a very good thing, (like I said, I don’t know that much about hockey).
Was this the main news event last night? Nope. What made the headlines was the fact that the IOC got pissy perturbed that the ladies were celebrating by drinking beer on the ice – after most of the fans had already left the building. Are there laws in Canada about drinking beer in a stadium? Nope. Are these ladies all old enough to drink legally? Yep. So what’s the big deal? The IOC feels it’s inappropriate behaviour. (and yes – I spelled behaviour with a “u”!)
These ladies just proved that they are the best team in the world. Celebrating is an acceptable behaviour here in Canada – and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
I am Canadian is much more than a brand – it’s an irrefutable fact. It’s a lifestyle choice. The girls were living the brand last night, and I am proud of what they did – during and after the game.
I am Canadian. Born that way, and hope to die that way. Ideally soon after my 150th birthday, and hopefully watching Canada own the podium. Again.
