Podcasting – Porn for your Ears

A few years ago, I chose to get a dog to motivate me to get more exercise.  It was a bit of a surprise to my wife, as she knew we were thinking about a dog, she just didn’t know it was going to happen that quickly.   She already knew I needed the exercise. I think the conversation went something like “Let’s go to the SPCA today” and ended with “now we have a dog of our own.”  There might have been a few things in between, but not much.  Two and half years later – I’m bigger than I’ve ever been, even with two substantial walks a day.  So, we decided to get another dog.  Not sure if I can handle gaining another 15lbs over the next two years, but I’ll certainly give it a try.  Yay for living healthy!

One of the things I discovered in the course of all this walking was the beauty of the podcast.  You might have heard of them as a dying art form, a media channel that never really took off.  It’s not true.  To use a horrible cliché (but really, aren’t they all horrible?), the rumours of the death of podcasting have been greatly exaggerated.  Podcasting is a great learning tool, stress reliever, musical alternative, and entertainment vehicle – and there are new podcasts coming out every day.

Here are a few of the podcasts that I enjoy as often as possible:

  • Stuff You Should Know – 4.5 stars on iTunes, with over 4700 customer ratings.  Excellent podcast from two pretty funny guys.  If you’re a jeopardy freak, or you’re not great at small talk, this is  a great podcast for you.
  • Marketing Over Coffee – Who woulda thunk that two guys sitting in a Dunkin Donuts, talking about marketing would be interesting?  Great sense of humour, combined with outstanding online marketing tips and tricks. There are many online marketing podcasts, but what sets these guys apart is the fact that they are actually successful with it.
  • Definitely Not the Opera (DNTO) –  Maybe it’s the Canadian in me, but this podcast on the CBC is usually excellent.  Hosted by Sook-Yin Lee, this podcast offers an interesting look into our personal peccadilloes.  (Bonus CBC podcast – check out This is That – it’s just a little bit awesome)
  • Freakonomics Radio –  These guys are pretty good at taking complex topics and making them 1. Interesting, and 2. Understandable.  I don’t listen to this one weekly, but I will usually download a few and listen to them in succession.  Not sure if that’s good or not…
  • How Did This Get Made – my new favourite podcast – but it’s definitely NOT safe for work.  This is a newer podcast, featuring a decent group of actors.  They claim to love bad movies (who doesn’t?)  but I think what they really love to do is skewer Nick Cage (Season of the Witch and Drive Angry – SHOT in 3D!)  If you love movies, or love people making fun of other people in movies, this is a must hear podcast.  My only complaint is that they only do two full episodes per month.

Have a listen to some of these podcasts, and I think you will understand why this medium is only going to grow larger.  Great content, interesting presenters, and an easy delivery system.  It’s not rocket science (which, if you listen to Stuff You Should Know, you’d learn that it isn’t really that difficult….)

What are some of the must-hear podcasts on your iPod?  Tell me in the comments, and I will try to make sure I give it a listen.
