If you’re running a small business in Victoria and don’t have a list of local freelancers at your disposal, you’re either paying too much or not getting the quality you need – or even worse – it might be both. Most small businesses understand the need to advertise, especially for those just starting up, hoping to create an awareness around their brand.  The challenge is, money is tight.  If you think an ad agency is the only option, you might be surprised to learn how much you can do yourself.  While an ad agency is great for creating a comprehensive … Continue reading

Hiring on Job Boards – Which is Right for You?

One of the frustrations I hear from professionals in my network is it can be very difficult to be heard on the internet – there’s so much noise and so many distractions, it’s nearly impossible to find your next employee when posting online. The people I work with and the companies that hire me are a natural match – good people and good companies. I thought it might be helpful to share a quick guide on some key aspects to posting your job online, ensuring you get the right person for your next job opening. Make sure your posting is … Continue reading

Why You Need Your Own Domain

Stake Your Claim on the Internet If you’ve got a website that ends in .blogspot.com, .wordpress.com, or .squarespace.com, or anything other than yourwebsite.com/.ca/.info/.net – you need to read this post. There’s nothing wrong with using any of these free blogs or websites.  They’re a great way to quickly and easily get online and establish your online presence.  Free is a very good thing, and there’s no reason for you to change if you don’t want to.  The challenge with any of these services is that they are branding themselves – not you.  So if they ever make a change, you … Continue reading

Great Idea – Poor Execution – #OldSpice Duel

Yesterday was the big event, the social media duel of the decade.  Mano a Mano in el Bano. Old Spice Guy vs. Fabio.  A battle via social media to determine who is the most manly man to pitch the pit-stick. There were TV spots.  Lots of them. There were online ads.  Lots of them. There wasn’t a ton of lead-up before the event (as opposed to normal media, which is hammering the fall lineup 2-3 months before we’ll get to see any of these new “must see” shows). The event was scheduled for 9am PDT, and there was a fair … Continue reading

Old Old Spice vs New Old Spice: Mano-a-Mano en el Baño

It’s been a little while since we’ve heard from the Old Spice guy – Isaiha, and maybe you’ve noticed that there’s a new Old Spice guy – Fabio. The new Old Spice guy has had a few cute irritating videos pop up, openly mocking the classic vids we enjoyed earlier this year. Isaiha has responded to Fabio’s virtual insults, and today – there’s a social media duel happening at noon EST (9am PST). Even if you don’t like Old Spice – it’s bound to be a funny event, and should be interesting to see how much spill-over there is between the … Continue reading

Out-Grouping Groupon part II

Email Marketing for Your Business A few posts back, we wrote about the cost of some of the social media coupon sites like Groupon, Couvon, SwarmJam, and EthicalDeal; how they work, and what the costs are to your business.  This post is going to look at how to develop your own email database, and what you can do with it.  Why give over 75% away if you don’t have to? Gather emails You hopefully have something in place to gather emails from your clients, but if you aren’t doing that yet, here are a few tools that can help: Facebook … Continue reading

Lego Imagination (video) @nickpezzillo

I’ve got a love/hate relationship with YouTube.  I love watching great videos, and hate that I go to watch one, and leave after watching 20. I stumbled across this channel by Pezzillo, Producer/Director/Editor.  Fantastic talent here – and well worth sharing.  You can check out his portfolio at pezzilloworks.com Spec work here, but I think he does a great job of capturing the world seen from a 4 year old   This one’s a little bit cheezy, but not in a bad way – and it won 2nd place in the MoFilm Lego contest

How to Out-group Groupon

Exposing your business to the tens of thousands of daily Groupon, Couvon, SwarmJam, EthicalDeal, and every other social media coupon site members is a tempting option, but it’s one that every business owner needs to carefully evaluate. There are more than enough posts and articles saying that the social media coupon craze is going to kill your business and create an economy of coupon-only shoppers who jump from business to business depending on who has the best deal that day. We’re not telling you these sites are bad for your business – only you can decide that.  We’re just going … Continue reading

Google – Making Search Even Easier (video)

Some very interesting new search tools from Google; Search Using Images, and Search Using Voice, and Google +1 Search by Voice After installing the chrome plugin, I tested it out a few times.  Works pretty well, although the word “brandscaping” brought up some interesting results – none of them close to being correct.  I guess we need to get our name out there a bit more to appease the Google gods! (looks like this is available in US English only at the moment, but I was able to install this Chrome extension to enable it – now I’ve got the … Continue reading
