What Kind of Freelancer are You?

Just a really quick post today because I want to know more about you and I image you probably want to hear less from me! I’m going to be adding a section to the Brandscaping blog to feature local freelancers, including some good info as to why local businesses should choose a freelancer to help them find success.  Victoria has an amazing cross-section of small and medium sized businesses, but I don’t think they know how much talent is available to them locally.  With your help, I’d like to help change that. So – what kind of freelance work do you do? … Continue reading

Volunteers for #YYJFreelanceCamp – Interested?

Your interest in a local freelance camp has been outstanding – thank you for the support and suggestions you’ve provided so far. Skip to the bottom of the page if you’re interested in going to the 604FreelanceCamp in Vancouver on September 10. I’d love to procrastinate a bit further – but it looks like there’s more than enough interest and available talent, so a Freelance Camp in Victoria is looking to be a necessity, not just a whim.  Since Vancouver is holding their event in September, we should plan our event for October. If you’re interested in volunteering to help … Continue reading

Hiring on Job Boards – Which is Right for You?

One of the frustrations I hear from professionals in my network is it can be very difficult to be heard on the internet – there’s so much noise and so many distractions, it’s nearly impossible to find your next employee when posting online. The people I work with and the companies that hire me are a natural match – good people and good companies. I thought it might be helpful to share a quick guide on some key aspects to posting your job online, ensuring you get the right person for your next job opening. Make sure your posting is … Continue reading

Why You Need Your Own Domain

Stake Your Claim on the Internet If you’ve got a website that ends in .blogspot.com, .wordpress.com, or .squarespace.com, or anything other than yourwebsite.com/.ca/.info/.net – you need to read this post. There’s nothing wrong with using any of these free blogs or websites.  They’re a great way to quickly and easily get online and establish your online presence.  Free is a very good thing, and there’s no reason for you to change if you don’t want to.  The challenge with any of these services is that they are branding themselves – not you.  So if they ever make a change, you … Continue reading

#YYJFreelanceCamp – Request for Freelance Experts

First of all – thanks to everyone for taking the poll to vote on what you want to see at a FreelanceCamp in Victoria this fall.  (To read all of the posts on this topic, please click here) The topics that got the most votes: Freelance Best Practices How to Set Your Rates How to Maximize Your Profits How to Outsource How to Prospect New Clients We’re still working on an appropriate venue, but one of the most important decisions we still need to take care of – who do you want to see at the event?  We’ve got some … Continue reading

Enhance your Google+ Experience with these 5 Tools

I haven’t been overly active in Google+ yet, more lurking/stalking to see how the space is going to be used and what the expectations are within it, but since I love tools, I figured I would share a few of the ones I’ve tried out.  Hopefully they will help you enjoy the Google+ space, if you’ve taken the time to check it out.  If you haven’t, give it a try.  It’s still in its infancy, and watching the (r)evolution is quite interesting. At the moment, it looks like most of the tools for Google+ exist for Chrome only, but since … Continue reading

Great Idea – Poor Execution – #OldSpice Duel

Yesterday was the big event, the social media duel of the decade.  Mano a Mano in el Bano. Old Spice Guy vs. Fabio.  A battle via social media to determine who is the most manly man to pitch the pit-stick. There were TV spots.  Lots of them. There were online ads.  Lots of them. There wasn’t a ton of lead-up before the event (as opposed to normal media, which is hammering the fall lineup 2-3 months before we’ll get to see any of these new “must see” shows). The event was scheduled for 9am PDT, and there was a fair … Continue reading

Old Old Spice vs New Old Spice: Mano-a-Mano en el Baño

It’s been a little while since we’ve heard from the Old Spice guy – Isaiha, and maybe you’ve noticed that there’s a new Old Spice guy – Fabio. The new Old Spice guy has had a few cute irritating videos pop up, openly mocking the classic vids we enjoyed earlier this year. Isaiha has responded to Fabio’s virtual insults, and today – there’s a social media duel happening at noon EST (9am PST). Even if you don’t like Old Spice – it’s bound to be a funny event, and should be interesting to see how much spill-over there is between the … Continue reading

I’ve Just Been Phished – Now What? – Part II – Twitter

Yesterday we talked about some of the phishing scams on Facebook (phishing: the act of trying to get your personal information through deceptive means).  The practise isn’t limited to Facebook – you see it in your email, your Twitter, and even on your phone.  Information has huge value, so unscrupulous people are constantly trying to trick you into sharing your info.  Here are a few ways to prevent them from getting what they want. Odd DMs You’ve likely received an odd Direct Message from one of the people you’re following.  One of the current examples says “LOL can you tell … Continue reading

I’ve Just Been Phished – Now What?

You were innocently cruising around Facebook, and noticed one of your trusted friends had an interesting post – “Watch this girl – she forgot she left her cam on!” Seems like an interesting link, and it comes from someone you know and trust.  After all, they’re in your tight group of Facebook friends, right? You click on the link, it looks a little funny because it says that you have to agree that you are over 16.  That’s odd, none of your other Facebook links do that, but – well, the video does look kinda funny.  Maybe she even does … Continue reading
